safe ocean swimming
This article is mainly talking about the issue of New York City beaches. Two New York City beaches were
closed because of high bacteria levels. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) figured out that “ there is not a strong
statistical relationship between the amount of fecal coli form and the likelihood of people getting sick, while enterococcus is a good predictor of illnesses in all waters. Gastroenteritis, an irritation and inflammation of the digestive tract, is the most common illness associated with swimming in waters with high levels of enterrococcus.” The National Parks service and the clean water project at the National Resource Defense council are changing their policy to require EPA standard.
Nobody wants to swim in the beaches, which have abundant bacteria and viral illness. It is our responsibility to clean our beaches and to keep them clean.
First, the key to dealing with the problem we face is recognizing that it is an individual matter. We should be aware of the fact that we destroyed our environment and it is our duty to clean it. Most people think that somebody will clean the environment but avoiding one’s responsibility will not solve the problems. We need to understand the connection, which is everything is connected to and intermingled with everything, is most important for sustaining life on the earth.
Second, if you understand the concept of individual responsibility then you need to put into the action. For example, when you go to the beach you clean up what you mass up. This action seems to be easy but only few of us doing it. In this case, people do not fully understand the concept of individual responsibility.
In conclusion, the author only talks about New York City but these problems are all over the world. It is better to do it late than never do it.
